Overview

The Cummins ISX oil cooler is a critical component that maintains proper oil temperature in Class 8 trucks. Failure can lead to oil contamination, overheating, and engine damage.

Failure Symptoms

  • Oil pressure warning light
  • High oil temperature readings
  • Coolant in oil (milky appearance)
  • Oil in coolant (foamy coolant)
  • Reduced engine performance

Diagnosis Steps

Step 1: Check Coolant

Inspect coolant for oily residue or foam, which indicates oil cooler failure.

Step 2: Oil Analysis

Send oil sample to lab for coolant contamination testing.

Step 3: Pressure Test

Pressure test the oil cooler circuit at 100 PSI.

Replacement Procedure

1. Drain engine oil and coolant

2. Remove oil cooler housing
