The Ford 6.0L Power Stroke diesel engine, produced from 2003 to 2007, is notorious for EGR cooler failures. Studies show that over 40% of these engines experience EGR cooler failure within the first 150,000 miles.
Step 1: Visual Inspection
Check for white residue around EGR cooler connections. Look for coolant staining on the exhaust manifold.
Step 2: Pressure Test
Perform a cooling system pressure test at 20 PSI. Monitor for pressure drop over 15 minutes.
Step 3: Exhaust Gas Analysis
Use an exhaust gas analyzer to detect coolant vapors in the exhaust stream.
Choose 304 or 316L stainless steel construction with reinforced end caps and full pressure testing. The SUMEC SMC-EGR-F601 is tested at 45 PSI before shipping.
1. Always flush the cooling system before installing
2. Replace coolant with Ford-approved VC-7-B
3. Inspect the EGR valve and replace if contaminated
4. Torque all connections to spec (18 ft-lbs)
